Oregon State wanted to make sure the fans in Portland got their money’s worth.

Inside Providence Park, the Beavers ripped through Montana State time and time again for a 68-28 victory Saturday night. The Beavers moved to 3-0 for the first time since 2014. Both the margin and the 68 points scored were the most for Oregon State in a single game since a 77-3 win over Nicholls State on Dec. 1, 2012.

Quarterback Chance Nolan contributed five total touchdowns — four passing and one rushing — while completing 19 of his 25 pass attempts for 276 yards. Deshaun Fenwick led the Beaver backfield with 63 rushing yards on nine carries. Fenwick, Nolan, Damien Martinez, Jam Griffin, and Kanoa Shannon all scored rushing touchdowns as the ground game produced 216 yards at 5.1 a carry.

Tre’Shaun Harrison had a game-best 133 receiving yards and a score. Anthony Gould also brought in two receiving scores on five catches.

The Beavers struck first on the scoreboard, taking the opening drive 90 yards on just seven plays – capping it off with a 25-yard dash to the endzone by Fenwick. The Bobcats answered with a touchdown of their own, and then Oregon State shut things down for an extended run.

Ryan Cooper Jr. picked off Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott on the first play of a drive early in the second quarter. Seven plays later, the Beavers were in the endzone.

Rejzohn Wright picked off Mellott on the Bobcats’ next offensive possession and returned the ball 26 yards down to the Montana State 12. Two plays later, Nolan hit Gould over the middle for a 9-yard score.

Oregon State went into the locker room with a 34-14 lead. Montana State got the ball to start the third quarter, picked up 14 yards on the opening play of the possession, and then stalled. Gould — who had himself a night to remember — housed the ensuing punt.

For the game, the Beaver defense held Montana State to 269 yards and to 5.4 yards a play. They forced three turnovers and created four tackles for loss. While Montana State was 3-for-10 on third downs, Oregon State was 10-for-12.

Simply put: the Beavers completely dominated last year’s FCS runner-up in all three phases of the game.

Coach Jonathan Smith and this Oregon State team are off to quite the start. Confidence within the group is soaring. And they’ll get a chance next week to validate their start when they host No. 7 USC at Reser Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. PT kick on Sept. 24.
