Top-ranked 2023 defensive lineman sets commitment date, Oregon a finalist
The best defensive lineman in the 2023 class will announce his college commitment soon.
Katy (Texas) Paetow 5-star defensive lineman David Hicks will make his choice known live on ESPN on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 1:30 pm PT. Hicks will choose from a group of finalists that has Oregon alongside Miami, Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas A&M, and Michigan State.

Oklahoma is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite, with a prediction for Hicks to end up with the Sooners logged by 247Sports’ director of recruiting, Steve Wiltfong. Oregon, led by coach Dan Lanning and defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi, have been in on Hicks all throughout the process, though. He took an official visit to Oregon on June 17, a return trip for him to Eugene.
The 6-foot-4, 270-pound defensive lineman ranks as the ninth-best prospect in the 2023 class, according to the industry-generated 247 Composite. He’s the No. 1 recruit at his position and in the state of Texas. Oregon is working on a top-15 class that features several blue-chip defensive linemen, but Hicks would no doubt be the crown jewel of the defensive haul.
As a junior last fall, he was named the Texas District 5-6A Defensive MVP, leading Allen with 88 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, and 13 sacks. He was a Texas 6A first-team all-state selection by the Texas Sportswriters Association (TSWA).
