The New York Liberty are still fighting for a playoff spot. So wins like Sunday night’s 89-69 victory over the Phoenix Mercury will go a long way toward making sure the hunt pays off.

Sabrina Ionescu is doing everything she can to help the cause. In the Liberty’s 20-point victory, Ionescu finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and a franchise record-tying 16 assists. She becomes just the fourth player in WNBA history to finish with at least 16 assists in a single game.

The former Oregon star has taken her game to another level in Year 3 with the Liberty. She was a first-time All-Star this season, and while she’s been piling on the points and racking up triple-doubles at a rate precious few others in WNBA history have matched, Ionescu put on her playmaker hat Sunday night.

She finished just two assists shy of tying the WNBA record for assists in a game.

Ionescu and the Liberty moved within 1.5 games of the final playoff spot with their win. The team they’re chasing, the Los Angeles Sparks, come to the Barclays Center for a matchup on Tuesday.
