Oregon scores its second 5-star commitment of the Early Signing Period; lands elite edge rusher over USC, Ohio State
Oregon is feasting at the outset of the Early Signing Period.
Some 10 minutes after news landed that 5-star Notre Dame safety Peyton Bowen had flipped his commitment to the Ducks, news came down that 5-star edge rusher Matayo Uiagalelei plans to sign with Oregon as well. Oregon had been battling neck-and-neck with Ohio State and USC for the premiere pass-rusher for months, and indications from industry reporters in recent weeks suggested USC might be the play, but coach Dan Lanning and his staff closed hard to land Uiagalelei.

The Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco athlete is a consensus 5-star prospect, ranked No. 31 nationally in the industry-generated 247 Composite and No. 17 in the Top247. A 6-foot-5, 265-pound two-way star, Uiagalelei is the fifth-best edge rusher in the class and the fourth-best recruit from the state of California.
The folks at 247Sports think he can be a top-five player at his position regardless of whether he begins his college career as an edge rusher or a tight end. Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi took the lead on Uiagalelei’s recruitment and it would appear that’s the side of the ball Uiagalelei will focus on in Eugene.
“I like Tosh and I’m looking forward to being coached by him,” Uiagalelei told 247Sports’ Greg Biggins. “He also works with the outside ‘backers and that’s where they see me so I’ll be able to work closely with him.”
247Sports’ National Recruiting Expert Chris Singleton had this to say on Uiagalelei’s game:
This top-notch edge has unique athleticism for someone his size. Possessing excellent agility, change of direction, bend and power makes him one of the best players in the country. He is light on his feet and plays with very good power and technique on the edge and in the run game with room to continue to develop and improve. As a pass rusher he does a good job using speed to power as well as having a good dip and rip move and always using active hands to prevent lineman from latching on to him. He consistently gains ground on his rush without stopping his feet. Displays a twitch out of his stance that translates to explosion once he makes contact with the blocker along with a strong punch to control and disengage to defeat the blocker. Can redirect when needed without hesitation to make plays away from him with good runs and chase effort. As a two-way player you are treated to an athlete that could be a top-flight tight end prospect with his burst, excellent body control to make plays on the ball as well as serving as a more than adequate blocker in the run game. He is a guy that moves easy and natural with enough speed to create separation as a receiver where he makes many plays as.
His commitment gives the Ducks three 5-star prospects in the class so far. You can view his highlight tape below, via Hudl:
