Oregon safety Bennett Williams is changing his number.

During the Celebration of Life memorial service Thursday night for Spencer Webb, Williams announced during a taped message that he’s taking over No. 4 on defense. After wearing No. 18 for his first four years in the program, Webb switched to No. 4 during the spring. He passed away on July 13 in an accident at Triangle Lake. Williams wants to honor his teammate and friend.

“I’m wearing No. 4,” Williams said Thursday. “That thing is going to be really special to me this year. I even got it tattooed on me yesterday for you, buddy.

“… Me and him started getting pretty close this last year. On my birthday in February my girlfriend was gone and I wasn’t planning on doing anything. Spencer remembered that it was my birthday and he said come spend the day with me, and I spent the whole day with Spencer and it was just a fun memory. That was special to me. It wasn’t forced and it was so selfless. That was what he always did. He was always looking to help other people and make them smile. His legacy will carry on for that and many more things.”

Williams wore No. 15 last season. According to 247Sports’ Erik Skopil, Daymon David will take over No. 12 after wearing No. 4 on the defensive side of the ball last season.

During a nearly 90-minute service on Thursday, Williams and a number of his teammates shared stories about Webb. The service began with comments from first-year head coach Dan Lanning. Fellow tight end Cam McCormick, Webb’s recruiting visit host, shared a particularly touching story about the two.

Webb once drew a happy face and a sad face on his cleats.

“He told me it was a reminder to him every day that he can choose to be happy or sad, but at the end of the day the choice was ultimately his to make, just as it was mine,” McCormick said. “I’ll never forget that advice.”
