Oregon has landed a commitment from College of San Mateo (Calif.) cornerback Sione Laulea.

The Ducks beat out USC and Miami for Laulea’s pledge, and it’s a big one. He’s a 4-star recruit in the industry-generated 247 Composite and he’s ranked as the top overall prospect at the junior college level in the 2024 class.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound defensive back announced his decision on the 247Sports YouTube page Sunday night, then took to social media shortly after.

Laulea said he plans to enroll early in January, go through spring ball, and push for immediate playing time.

“Last year, they had a corner by the name of Christian Gonzalez drafted in the first round,” Laulea said, mentioning that he and Gonzalez have similar physical profiles. “When I go to Oregon, they know exactly what to do with someone like me.”

Laulea also mentioned Oregon corner Khyree Jackson, who has been strong for the Ducks so far throughout the 5-0 start to 2023. Laulea liked the track record of Oregon cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin.

After playing his high school ball for San Mateo (Calif.) Serra, Laulea chose the JUCO route over just one scholarship offer (from Sacramento State). With the Bulldogs, he was part of a national JC championship team in 2022.

Oregon now holds 23 known commitments in the 2024 cycle. The class ranks 13th nationally and features three promising cornerbacks — 4-star Dakoda Fields (No. 81 nationally), 4-star Ify Obidegqu (No. 137), and now Laulea.
