Oregon had to work for it, but the Ducks closed out a tumultuous regular season at home on Saturday with a 73-68 win over Stanford to claim the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Pac-12 Tournament and, as reward, a bye in the first round of play.

The Ducks had a 12-point lead with a little under 10 minutes to play. A triple from Keeshawn Barthelemy — who put up 14 points off the bench — capped a 9-2 run and had the home side looking like they’d run away from the visiting Cardinal.

But Stanford fought back. A 9-0 run from the Cardinal immediately followed as Brandon Angel got himself going. Angel scored 11 of his game-high 18 points over the final 7:11 to keep Stanford in the game.

A couple of turnovers from N’Faly Dante aided the run. Will Richardson sought the death nail with a couple of triples that fell offline. Stanford kept itself close — and Oregon helped that — but couldn’t ever really threaten.

With 30 seconds on the clock, Stanford’s Harrison Ingram baited Richardson into a foul on a stepback 3-pointer. Ingram stepped to the free throw line for three attempts with his team down six.

He made just two.

Dante secured the rebound and was immediately sent to the line at the other end. An issue for the big man all night, Dante missed both to keep the margin at four points. Stanford grabbed the board with 24 seconds left and then ran off 12 of that trying to get a look before coach Jerod Haase took a timeout.

Out of the timeout, Stanford wanted an action to set Spencer Jones up for a 3, but Oregon defended it well. The ball made its way to Michael Jones under the rim, and he found his way to the free throw line with five seconds on the clock.

After missing the first, Haase instructed Jones to intentionally miss the second. Oregon secured the board and Stanford — out of timeouts — sent Dante back to the free throw line. He made one of two to close the door.

Oregon made just 12 of 18 from the foul line in the game. Richardson missed the front end of a one-and-one with 1:28 to play as well. A couple more made freebies down the stretch and Stanford would have been put to bed much sooner.

And yet, Dante’s 15-point, 12-rebound double-double and Richardson’s 10-point, six-assist outing helped keep the Ducks on the high side for the last three-quarters of the game. Though the free throw shooting late left much to be desired, the Ducks did well to knock down their looks from beyond the 3-point line, finishing 9-for-23 from deep.

The win gives Oregon three straight to close out the regular season. A rocky start culminated with a fourth-place finish in the Pac-12 for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

In next week’s league tourney, the Ducks (18-13, 12-8 Pac-12) will await the winner of the 5-12 matchup.
