Oregon coach Dan Lanning and his staff are going to celebrate Wednesday with some cigars. Almost certainly. The Ducks are having a monster day as the Early Signing Period officially opens.

The morning brought about two 5-star commitments on the defensive side of the football. Shortly after, 4-star cornerback Daylen Austin announced he has flipped his commitment from LSU to Oregon. Austin had been a member of the Tigers’ 2023 class since May, but ultimately decided to roll with the Ducks after a late push from both Oregon and Louisville to flip the Long Beach (Calif.) Poly prospect.

Among his top schools, Oregon is the only one that had yet to receive an official visit from Austin during the cycle. However, he made his way to campus for four different unofficial visits and fell in love. Austin told 247Sports he doesn’t plan to sign on Wednesday but he could do it later in the week or hold off until February.

“Coach Lanning is fine with it,” he told 247Sports’ Greg Biggins, “he knows I’m coming and has nothing to worry about.”

The 6-foot-1 Austin ranks as the 109th overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the industry-generated 247 Composite. He’s the 12th-ranked cornerback and the ninth-ranked recruit from the state of California. A multi-sport athlete for his high school, Austin has some serious speed.

He ran a wind-aided 10.82 100 and a wind-legal 10.99 100 as a junior in the spring of 2022. He also posted 100-meter times of 11.03, 11.09, 11.11 twice, and 11.15. He ran a pair of 22.73 200-meter times (one wind-aided) as well. Biggins wrote this on Austin’s game:

Austin is a tough, physical corner who has improved athletically over the last year. He’s one of the more technically sound corners in the region and really thrives in press coverage. He can bully an opposing receiver at the line of scrimmage and plays with a nice edge in his game. He loves to hit and it won’t shock us if he slides over and plays some safety in college because of his size and skill set. Older brother Alex Austin is a starting corner at Oregon State and a likely NFL Draft pick in April and Daylen is further along at the same stage. He’s also a dangerous return man and has returned multiple kicks for touchdowns. Ran on the track team the last two years with multiple sub 11.0-100m times to his credit.
