Oregon’s 2023 class once again features a quarterback.

After their own 2023 commit was flipped earlier this week, Oregon wasted little time going out and filling the spot with another blue-chip prospect. The Ducks received a commitment from 4-star Dripping Springs (Texas) quarterback Austin Novosad on Wednesday. Novosad also signed with the Ducks on Wednesday, the opening of the Early Signing Period.

He had been committed to Baylor for over a year. Novosad joined the Bears’ 2023 class in December of 2021. But with Dante Moore flipping his commitment from Oregon to UCLA on Monday, the Ducks went to work trying to reel in another. They extended an offer to Novosad on Tuesday, working overtime to convince him Eugene was the place to be.

And that work paid off.

He gives the Ducks a third scholarship quarterback heading into next year, joined by Bo Nix and Ty Thompson. An Elite 11 finalist, Novosad is a top-10 QB in the 2023 class and ranks inside the top 100 overall recruits in 247Sports’ in-house ranking. He’s 86th overall prospect in the class and the ninth quarterback in the Top247. The industry-generated 247 Composite has Novosad rated as the 10th-best quarterback and the 119th overall recruit.

“He has the ability to place the ball. If you watch his film you’re gonna see some really accurate throws, and challenging throws,” Lanning said at his signing day press conference on Wednesday. “And then the more you’re around him you realize his intelligence and his desire to be great.”

Oregon is getting a proven quarterback in the 6-foot-3, 185-pound thrower. He was a 33-game starter for Dripping Springs. As a senior, he led Dripping Springs to a 12-2 record and the Texas 6A D-II state quarterfinals while throwing for 2,911 yards and 39 touchdowns against five interceptions.  64.5 percent of attempts.

As a junior, he was the Texas District 12-5A-I Overall MVP after a 10-1 season. He threw for 3,399 yards and 40 touchdowns with nine interceptions. As a sophomore, Novosad won Texas District 12-5A D-I Offensive Newcomer of the Year after throwing for 2,887 yards and 36 scores with six interceptions.

He completed north of 60% of his throws each season as a starter and closed his career with 117 career touchdowns.

With Novosad in the picture, and a handful of other blue-chip commitments Wednesday morning, the Ducks’ 2023 class has jumped into the top 10 nationally. You can see some of his tape below, via Hudl. Elite11 also tweeted a breakdown, which is linked below:
