Oregon expecting to lean on Keeshawn Barthelemy's speed in 2022-23
In an 80-45 season-opening win over Florida A&M, Keeshawn Barthelemy was heavily featured.
With South Carolina transfer Jermaine Cousinard on the shelf, the former Colorado guard drew a start alongside Will Richardson for the Oregon Ducks. He took as many 3s as Richardson (eight) and finished two minutes shy of Richardson’s team-leading 33 minutes of court time.
He scored 13 points in his Oregon debut, connecting on four of his 10 shots, dishing out a pair of assists, swiping a pair of steals, and finishing with a plus-22 in his 31 minutes.
The speed with which he operates was on full display. And Oregon looks like it’s going to rely on Barthelemy, at least early on, to push the tempo and use his quickness to get the group into its stuff.
“But he’s got to improve his defense, improve his passing,” said coach Dana Altman. “He’s the quickest player we have. He’ll keep getting more comfortable with us, but we do need his quickness we do need him to keep pushing the ball.”
Altman likes the youngster to just keep getting better as he gets more comfortable in the system and the rotation.
“I think he’s the only guy that’s been at every practice, so I can’t complain. I think his game will come together,” Altman said. “He hit that first 3 and got a little carried away with a couple, and I think that got him out of rhythm. He’s been shooting it well in practice. Guys are going to have those nights. You just have to find a way.”
The Ducks return to the floor Friday night against UC Irvine, with tipoff set for 8 p.m. PT.
