Dan Lanning felt Oregon had one of its better Wednesday practices of the season earlier this week in prep for Washington. That was in spite of the Washington fight song blasting on speakers throughout the day. The first-year Oregon coach didn’t have your normal practice playlist working this week. Instead, he queued up “Bow Down to Washington.”

A top-25 matchup between the PNW rivals inside Autzen Stadium on Saturday called for some new tactics. Lanning hasn’t shied away from the significance of the matchup to either his players, the program’s alumni, or its fans. If anything, he’s embraced the hatred.

He knew the kind of response he’d get. Or, at the very least, he hoped.

And, as expected, everyone got sick of hearing it pretty quickly.

“I’ve heard way too much of it all practice,” said safety Bennett Williams. “Despite many efforts to try and get him to turn it off, he’s just turned it up louder. I’m done hearing that. Hopefully, we don’t hear it at all on Saturday.”

Added corner Trikweze Bridges: “I’m tired of it. I don’t plan on hearing it none in Autzen, so it’s just annoying to hear it in practice.”

Added defensive lineman Keyon Ware-Hudson: “I’ve been trying to tell him to change the song and everything, but we do what the headman says.”

Lanning shrugged when asked where the idea came from. Just an idea, he said. But he’s right there with his players after a week.

“Yeah, I’m tired of that song,” he said. “Definitely tired of that song.”

Oregon has won three in a row and 15 of the last 17 against its rival to the north. This year’s Husky squad brings a bit more bite than in previous years, though. The fight song has certainly gotten its fair share of run throughout the season; UW is averaging 38.6 points a game under first-year coach Kalen DeBoer.

The last time the Huskies had an offense this prolific was in 2016. The UW fight song went off a little too often for the Ducks’ taste that year in Eugene.

Lanning and the Ducks are looking to keep it off the speakers on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. PT on FOX.
