One of 2023's best defenders visiting Oregon for home-opener weekend
Matayo Uiagalelei, one of the very best defensive prospects in the country for the Class of 2023, is reportedly sticking around Eugene this weekend to visit with Oregon.
Ducks Digest’s Max Torres caught up with Uiagalelei after his high school’s 49-0 win over Portland’s Central Catholic inside Autzen Stadium on Friday night. Torres shared that Uiagalelei plans to stay through the weekend for the Ducks’ home opener against Eastern Washington.

Uiagalelei has three tackles for loss and a forced fumble through the first two games of his senior season.
A 6-foot-5, 265-pound edge rusher from California, Uiagelelei is not just one of the best high school senior defenders in America, he’s also one of the best prospects — period — in the country. He’s a 5-star in the industry-generated 247 Composite and the eighth-ranked prospect in the 2023 class. He’s also the No. 3 edge rusher, per the Composite.
Uiagalelei took an official visit to Oregon back in June. He’s also taken officials to Ohio State and USC. Oregon is working on a class that currently ranks 13th nationally. The group is headlined by 5-star offensive playmakers in quarterback Dante Moore and wideout Jurrion Dickey, but it also features some elite blue-chip defensive line talent in Blake Purchase, Terrance Green, and A’mauri Washington.
Uiagalelei had six tackles for loss and three sacks as a junior last fall, as well as six touchdown receptions as a tight end. You can view his highlight tape below, via Hudl:
