Marcus Mariota opened the 2022 season as the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. Unfortunately, his time with the Falcons is over after just one season.

Atlanta announced Tuesday morning that the team was releasing Mariota heading into March. The Falcons are expected to save around $12 million in salary cap space with the move as the team continues to rebuild.

Mariota started 13 games for the Falcons before eventually giving way to Desmond Ridder as the starter. Atlanta went 5-8 under Mariota with the QB showing flashes but failing to find consistent success with the offense.

Outlook for Mariota moving forward

At this point in Mariota’s career, his time with the Falcons was likely the last shot for Mariota to show he has what it takes to be a starting piece for a contending team in the NFL. Nevertheless, he still showed an ability to make plays in the 2022 season.

It’s likely Mariota will still find a team for the 2023 season. However, he’s likely to be a backup at this point in his career.
