Justin Herbert will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 NFL season after undergoing surgery to repair the broken index finger on his throwing hand, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Los Angeles Chargers’ star quarterback was forced out of Sunday’s loss to Denver with the injury. Chargers coach Brandon Staley said on Monday Herbert would seek out advice from multiple hand specialists and the Chargers would go from there.

“All of our focus has got to be on his future,” Staley said Monday. “Certainly, there’s nothing more important than that, than his right hand. And his long-term future. He’s 25 years old and he’s got a really, really bright future in front of him. So, like I said, every decision we make is going to be with that in mind.”

Herbert’s streak of consecutive NFL starts will end at 62. His fourth NFL season comes to a close with 3,134 yards passing, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Herbert also ran for three rushing scores this season while completing 65% of his passes.

The Chargers (5-8) will turn to backup Easton Stick in the absence of their first-round pick from 2020. They have four games remaining, the first of which comes Thursday against the Las Vegas Raiders.
