Oregon will have a decal on its helmets this season honoring tight end Spencer Webb — a spider web with Webb’s jersey number, No. 4, in the middle. The Ducks will leave his locker untouched. A seat will remain open in the tight end room for Webb. When the team begins its season on Saturday against Georgia, it’ll do so a man down.

Webb passed away this summer after a rock-climbing incident. The tragedy rocked Oregon and first-year head coach Dan Lanning. They’re playing for Webb this season. On Saturday, during ESPN’s College GameDay, the Worldwide Leader aired a tribute to Webb that featured comments from Lanning, Webb’s brother Cody, and teammate Cam McCormick.

“You just really appreciate that something you care so much about, others do, too,” Cody said. “To think he was able to find his way to a level of this magnitude is just really special. You’re proud of him.”

Lanning mentions that as long as he remains the head coach at Oregon, the team will climb Spencer Butte to close out summer workouts.

The Ducks and Bulldogs kick off at 12:30 p.m. PT on ABC.
