Oregon suffered its first loss of the new college basketball season probably a bit earlier than anyone thought. The Ducks were beaten soundly Friday night at home by UC Irvine, 69-56. They led for all of seven seconds and trailed by as many as 27 in the contest.

N’Faly Dante led the team with 20 points and nine rebounds in the loss, though he shot 7-of-16 from the field and 6-of-11 from the free throw line to get there. As a team, Oregon was cold shooting it all night. Starting point guard Will Richardson finished with four points and seven turnovers, missing five of his six shots and all four of his 3-point attempts.

As a team, Oregon shot just 33% from the field and 19% from the 3-point line. A 13-3 spurt over the game’s final 4:35 made the margin look a bit more respectable, but Oregon head coach Dana Altman was extremely displeased with the effort in the loss.

“We got beat in every facet of the game — hustle, toughness. We had a number of practices that resembled that and I was fearful some time that would come,” Altman said. “They were the aggressor right from the start.

“Didn’t shoot it well, had some good looks, and then defensively, we gave their best three-point shooter 14 threes. I am sure he was disappointed he only made six. It was just a poor mental effort. I wish I had something positive to say. I am really disappointed, the guys are disappointed. We got punched right from the start.”

To open the season, Oregon has been particularly cold from 3-point land.

The Ducks are shooting 10-for-46 from 3 (21.7%). Richardson has only made two of his 12 attempts while Quincy Guerrier is 0-for-4. Keeshawn Barthelemy is 4-for-13 from 3. Those three are going to have to be able to knock down shots for Oregon, and through two games they just haven’t been able to.

We’ll see if they can rebound next Tuesday when they host Montana State (6 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Network).
