Dana Altman on Oregon-Oregon State rivalry: 'I don't have any plans of not playing them'
Dana Altman says he plans to talk to Wayne Tinkle at Oregon State and hopes the two can find a way to continue the Ducks’ annual matchup with the Beavers once Oregon moves to the Big Ten.
It’s still unclear what exactly will happen to the annual Oregon-Oregon State rivalry on the gridiron, but the Ducks’ head basketball coach said Thursday when he met with reporters that he wants the matchup to continue on the hardwood.
“Wayne and I will talk and see what works out best for us,” Altman said. “I think we should play Oregon State.
“It’ll be a big game for us — November, December, whenever we decide to play it. But I don’t have any plans on not playing them. I hope Wayne feels the same way. We really haven’t directly talked about it, but I sure hope that we’ll play him either November or December each year and go from there.”
Oregon’s annual matchup with Washington will be a protected rivalry in the new Big Ten. In a release announcing the move back in August, Oregon said it would prioritize keeping the matchup with Oregon State alive across all competitions.
Altman also lamented the breakup of the Pac-12.
“I’m a little disappointed,” he said. “I love the conference. I liked the travel, I liked the rivalries, and I liked the conference.
“… I’m not sure about taking some of those long trips in January, February, and March. We haven’t had one weather delay in 13 years. I don’t think we’re gonna get away with that in the future. I’m sad to see the conference end. I really am. I liked the Pac-12. You’re part of something for 13 years, you’re going to miss going places every year. But at the same time, the Big Ten is exciting. It’s exciting to go play those teams. And so those would be big challenges for us, and the travel will be different. It will take some time to get used to that. But it’s a change and we’ll work our way through it.
“But I don’t like the Pac-12 closing up shop. I wish we could have kept it together. It didn’t work out. So now we have a new opportunity and a new challenge and an exciting challenge to move to the Big Ten.”
