Dan Lanning was happy following a 36-27 win over USC on Saturday night, but he acknowledged there was plenty of work to be done.

Oregon didn’t play a complete game. Penalties were once again an issue. And rather than turning the game into a rout — the way Oregon looked like it would in the first quarter — the Ducks had a three-and-out and a missed field goal in the second half that kept the game from really opening up.

“We’re always going to celebrate wins here, especially wins against teams that we know have great talent like USC does,” Lanning said. “They’re well-coached, they do some things really well.

“That being said, we’re always going to be looking for opportunities to grow. If you’re not growing, something’s wrong with you. I’m excited that our guys went out and performed, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to change the standard for where I expect us to perform, and what I expect us to do moving forward.”

Lanning was asked in the postgame what continues to motivate the Ducks each week, and he said they have a ton of intrinsic drive right now.

“These guys are motivated by each other,” he said. “They have a purpose, and that purpose is inside that locker room. It’s not about people outside that locker room, they’re motivated by each other.”

Oregon has games left against Arizona State and Oregon State. The Beavs come to Autzen Stadium on Nov. 24 for a game that could very well be a play-in for the Pac-12 title. There’s plenty left to play for, and plenty of motivation to continue getting better.

“We have a mature group, they don’t let their highs get too high and they don’t let their lows get too low,” Lanning said. “I think it’s pretty clear we have a really good team, but we can be even better. I’m excited to see where we’re headed next.”
