Dan Lanning trusts his quarterback. And with the game on the line in the fourth quarter of the Holiday Bowl, that wasn’t changing.

The Oregon Ducks’ head coach revealed after a 28-27 win over North Carolina that Bo Nix called the play on the game-winning touchdown throw to Chase Cota.

“We feel really good about that play,” Nix said, per UO team reporter Rob Moseley. “I think everyone on the sideline wanted that play.”

On fourth-and-2 from the Carolina 6-yard-line, Cota flashed across the middle and Nix delivered a strike off his back foot with heavy pressure right in his face. It was Nix’s second touchdown throw of the fourth quarter, a frame that saw him complete nine of his 11 passes for 103 yards after totaling 102 through the first three quarters.

Cota, playing in the final game of his college career, hauled in the throw from Nix and rolled over his defender to break the goal line with 19 seconds remaining in the game.

North Carolina wasn’t able to get into field goal range on its final drive, and a hail mary attempt fell short to seal the victory for the Ducks.

The win moved Oregon to 10-3 on the season.
