Dan Lanning’s extension was made official on Thursday. The Oregon head coach is getting a notable raise on the long-term deal.

Lanning is set to make $45 million over 6 seasons. His original deal called for $29.1 million over 5 years.

The base salary Lanning jumps to $7 million in 2023. It increases by $200,000 yearly through 2028.

Matt Prehm of 247Sports notes that Lanning can potentially turn the 6-year deal into a 9-year deal. If Lanning leads the Ducks to 10 wins, he receives an extra year on the deal, with a maximum of 3 additional seasons.

“Today’s request for a contract extension for Coach Lanning is the first part of a bold vision to ensure that Oregon football and Oregon athletics remain competitive at the highest level of college athletics into the future,” Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens said in his comments to the board of trustees.

If Oregon were to fire Lanning, he would be owed the remainder of his contract. If Lanning leaves Oregon for another job, he owes the school $20 million.

“It’s a mutual commitment,” Mullen said of the buyout. “Coach Lanning and his family love being a part of this community. Obviously, they’ve put down roots, and they’ve engaged at a level we haven’t seen since probably the Brooks/Bellotti era.

“So, it’s something that is extremely important to our community, and Dan, Sauphia and their kids have made that kind of commitment. It shows that this is a two-way commitment, which is important to us.”
