Bo Nix named a finalist for Maxwell, Walter Camp, and Davey O'Brien awards
Bo Nix is a finalist for three of the most recognizable awards in college football.
Joining LSU’s Jayden Daniels and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., Nix has been named a finalist for the Maxwell Award (best overall player), the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, and the Davey O’Brien Award (best quarterback).
Each award will announce its winner during ESPN’s College Football Awards show on Dec. 8.
The three quarterbacks — Nix, Penix, and Daniels — are all expected to be in New York City for the Heisman Trophy ceremony as well. Nix and Penix will duel each other on Friday when Oregon faces Washington for the Pac-12 Championship. Specifically, Nix and Daniels have been neck-and-neck for the title of “best in the country” coming down the stretch.
Nix leads all of the FBS in passing (3,906) and completion rate (78.6%). He has 37 passing touchdowns this season, second only to Daniels’ 40.
Daniels’ primary advantage is on the ground, where he has 1,134 additional yards and 10 more touchdowns. There are only 10 Power Five running backs who have more rushing yardage than LSU’s quarterback.
But Nix’s key edge in the Heisman discussion and for other awards is that he has been just as outstanding while leading a team that still has national championship aspirations. LSU has three losses. Oregon has one. While LSU awaits its bowl destination, Oregon will play in its conference championship game for the right to go to the College Football Playoff.
Nix will have the national stage all to himself this upcoming weekend. He’ll have one more opportunity than Daniels to impress voters. Nix has closed the season exceptionally well. In November, he threw for 1,569 yards and totaled 19 touchdowns with just one interception.
The Ducks face Washington on Friday at 5 p.m. PT on ABC.
