Bo Nix, in New York City for Saturday evening’s Heisman Trophy ceremony, has full confidence in Oregon head coach Dan Lanning moving forward.

The Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback is moving on from the Ducks after this season. Saturday morning, Lanning and his coaching staff landed Nix’s immediate replacement. Oklahoma transfer Dillon Gabriel will spend his final season of eligibility in Eugene with Oregon. After two outstanding seasons with the Sooners, Gabriel figures to keep Oregon humming at the same level Nix has had the Ducks at over these last two seasons.

At a pre-ceremony press conference on Saturday, Nix was asked about Gabriel’s transfer to Oregon.

“I’m happy that they’re doing what they think is best and Coach Lanning’s going to do a good job of putting guys around the team who he thinks is going to win games,” Nix said, per The Oregonian’s James Crepea. “I think obviously the transfer portal worked out for me, so hopefully it continues to have a positive effect on college football.”

Nix transferred to Oregon after three seasons at Auburn. He came to Eugene with baggage, but since teaming up with Lanning and the Ducks, Nix has undoubtedly been one of college football’s best quarterbacks.

The Ducks have gone 21-5 with Nix at the controls, and they played for a Pac-12 championship this season.

Lanning is hoping another transfer addition can come in and have the same kind of plug-and-play success that Nix had. Gabriel was viewed as one of the best players in the portal, regardless of position. He’s within earshot of all-time NCAA career records for passing yards and passing touchdowns in a career.

“I think you got to work in silence and earn your stripes early,” Nix said when asked what advice he’d give Gabriel, per Crepea. “Go in there and try to do what he can to win over the team. It’s going to be up to him.”
