Bo Nix explains his decision to play for Oregon in Fiesta Bowl vs. Liberty
Bo Nix will play one final game for Oregon in what could certainly be viewed as a consolation game.
The Ducks had a chance to go to the College Football Playoff with a win over Washington in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Instead, a second loss to UW this season sent Oregon to the Fiesta Bowl. The year will end without a conference crown, a Playoff spot, and possibly without a Heisman Trophy for Nix, who entered the title fight as the favorite.
Disappointment would be understandable. In the modern game, opt-outs are expected in the postseason. Nix, however, wants one more chance to close out his career the right way.
“I want another opportunity to play with my teammates,” Nix told reporters on Friday during a Heisman Trophy press conference, per The Oregonian’s James Crepea. “I want another opportunity to play for Oregon. After (the Pac-12 championship game) I don’t want to end the season like that. I want another opportunity to go out there and have a blast and go out there and have fun.”
Oregon coach Dan Lanning revealed shortly after the bowl game was announced that Nix had already told his teammates he wanted to play in the game. And he wasn’t the only one to do so.
Nix is within earshot of a couple of records — both program and national — but more than anything, the determination to play in the Fiesta Bowl seems to be rooted in the quarterback’s desire to just simply take the field for Oregon one more time.
“I’m going to miss college football. It was my goal my whole entire life to be a college quarterback and to win a national championship,” Nix said after the Pac-12 title defeat. “Even though that may be off the table and it’s not necessarily something that can be obtained anymore, it was still a goal and I still worked for it every day.”
He’ll have an opportunity to raise a Fiesta Bowl trophy with the Ducks on Jan. 1 when they face Liberty (10 a.m. PT, ESPN).
