Travis Hunter has officially signed with Colorado, giving the Buffaloes a former No. 1 overall recruit to build around as coach Deion Sanders looks to rebuild the program.

Hunter announced his college commitment on his own YouTube page Wednesday night and send his signed letter of intent to the Buffaloes, who announced his signing shortly after. He chose CU over a group of six finalists that included Georgia, USC, Miami, Florida State, and Florida.

Hunter entered the transfer portal after Jackson State’s loss to NC Central in the Celebration Bowl. Though Colorado was viewed as the most likely destination, multiple reports suggested the Buffaloes were far from a lock. In his own words, Hunter said he took his time and weighed his options.

“I did like I said I was going to do, I was going to weigh my options out, go to see who had the best fit for me,” Hunter said Wednesday night. “I’ve seen the rumors that said it was about money. It’s not about money. It was about where I’m going to get developed most at.”

The 6-foot-1, 160-pound Hunter was the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2022 class, according to the industry-generated 247 Composite. He was committed to Florida State for more than a year before, in one of the biggest signing day stunners ever, flipped his pledge to Jackson State to team up with Sanders.

Immediately, Hunter was a two-way standout for a Tigers team that went 12-1. Hunter totaled 20 tackles, 10 pass breakups, two interceptions, and one forced fumble in eight games. He also added 18 catches for 188 yards and four touchdowns on the offensive side of the football.

Hunter is the third former Jackson State player to transfer to Colorado since Sanders took the job, joining quarterback Shedeur Sanders (Deion’s son) and offensive lineman Tyler Brown.
