Shedeur Sanders announced on Wednesday he has committed to transfer to Colorado, following his father, Deion Sanders, from Jackson State to Boulder.

Colorado announced his signing Wednesday afternoon as well. Wednesday marked the opening of the Early Signing Period, allowing prospects to sign National Letters of Intent with programs. One of the worst-kept secrets in college football has officially become reality.

The 6-foot-1, 198-pound former starting quarterback at Jackson State entered the transfer portal last Saturday. He was widely expected to land at Colorado, but that should do little to dull the excitement over his arrival.

Sanders joins a very quarterback-needy program at CU. The Buffaloes went 1-11 this season and were marred by poor quarterback play throughout. Brendon Lewis opened the year as the starter but was quickly replaced by JT Shrout. Shrout was then overtaken by freshman Owen McCown.

Lewis and McCown have since left the program. As has former Houston transfer Maddox Kopp.

A 247Sports Composite 4-star prospect coming out of Trinity Christian School in Texas, Sanders helped Jackson State to a 23-3 record, back-to-back SWAC Championships and back-to-back Celebration Bowl appearances during his time with the program.

He was the SWAC Freshman of the Year in 2021 and the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2022, throwing for 6,963 yards with 70 touchdowns against just 14 interceptions in two years of college action, adding another nine scores on the ground.

Sanders threw for 3,372 yards with 40 passing touchdowns while rushing for 173 yards with five rushing touchdowns in 2022. He had 349 passing yards and four touchdowns, in addition to one rushing touchdown, in Saturday’s loss to NC Central in the Celebration Bowl.

CU signed 16 recruits on Wednesday, including 4-star running back Dylan Andrews and 4-star wideout Adam Hopkins. The Buffs also signed 3-star quarterback Ryan Staub. Deion Sanders said at his introductory press conference his son will have to earn the job, but Shedeur is widely expected to take over as the Buffs’ starting quarterback.
