RJ Young has been known to hold a few controversial takes in the past. On Monday, the host of The Number One College Football Show kept things consistent.

Young has a bone to pick with the AP voters who did not vote for Colorado to be included within the Preseason AP Top 25, which was released Monday at Noon.

He argued that if USC entered 2022 ranked in the AP preseason Poll, Colorado should be ranked as well entering Year 1 under head coach Deion Sanders. Both USC and Colorado completely overhauled their roster and hired new coaches heading into their respective seasons.

Does Young have a point?

In my opinion, not really.

There’s a stark difference between USC in 2022 and Colorado heading into 2023. For one, the Trojans’ combined 3 years prior to 2022 and Buffaloes’ 3 years prior to this season are hardly comparable. USC tallied winning seasons in both 2019 and 2020 before falling to 4-8 in 2022.

Lincoln Riley proved he could win against strong D1 competition at Oklahoma. Sanders saw a lot of success at Jackson State, but let’s be honest here… it’s Jackson State. The Tigers’ schedule is hardly comparable to the Sooners’.

And that’s far from the only reason the AP voters passed on Colorado. Sure, they added some big name transfers and have a fun, new, exciting culture in Boulder with a completely revamped roster. That’s a good thing that could turn into something. I’m in the camp that says the Buffs will be around a 5-6 win team in 2023.

However, Sanders has proven nothing against legitimate D1 competition despite plenty of success at Jackson State. Neither have a lot of the new players on Colorado’s roster, including QB Shedeur Sanders. Turning around losing seasons at USC or any other national brand is one thing, but doing so at Colorado with no proven success against the rest of college football is a different story altogether.
