Colorado reportedly trying to flip 5-star Miami commit Cormani McClain
Colorado has emerged as a contender to flip 5-star cornerback and Miami commit Cormani McClain, according to a new report from 247Sports recruiting director Steve Wiltfong.
McClain was expected to announce his commitment to Miami on Wednesday, but his mother announced a change of plans. In a Twitter post, McClain’s mother, Tikisha White, revealed that there would be a delay in her son’s official signing. Shortly after, Wiltfong revealed that CU head coach Deion Sanders has been in touch as he looks to pull off another signing day stunner.
“Colorado in touch with Cormani McClain already this morning,” Wiltfong said on 247Sports’ Signing Day show. “So the Buffaloes trying to make a move on the No. 1 cornerback in the country. He has talked to coach Deion Sanders this morning.”
Since Sanders took over as Colorado’s head coach in early December, the Buffaloes have been aggressive in bringing in recruits and transfers to Boulder.
The 6-foot-2, 165-pound McClain is the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect and No. 1 player in Florida, according to the industry-generated 247 Composite. A Lakeland (Fla.) defensive back, McClain has been committed to the Hurricanes since Oct. 27.
One year ago at this time, Sanders did the same thing to another Florida program, flipping Travis Hunter — the Class of 2022’s No. 1 overall prospect — from Florida State and signing him to Jackson State during the Early Signing period. Since Sanders left Jackson State to take the CU job on Dec. 3, Hunter has also entered the transfer portal and CU has been linked to him.
“When I think about Cormani McClain not signing with Miami today, I can’t help but to think — what would it look like in Boulder, Colorado, with Cormani McClain at one corner and Travis Hunter on the other corner?” said Carl Reed, on 247Sports’ Signing Day show. “You’re talking about nightmares for quarterbacks in the Pac-12, Year 1. Imagine Travis Hunter, one of the greatest athletes that I’ve ever seen in person, on the other side of Cormani McClain. If coach Sanders can pull that out, that’s a legendary first (Signing) Day on the job.”
