Colorado loses second quarterback commit in as many days
Colorado saw its 2025 quarterback pledge back off his commitment on Sunday. On Monday, the Buffs’ 2024 quarterback commit did the same.
Danny O’Neil, a 6-foot, 185-pound quarterback prospect from Indianapolis (Ind.) Cathedral has left Colorado’s 2024 class. He had been committed to Colorado since March and took an official visit to Boulder in June.
The departure leaves Colorado without a quarterback in the 2024 cycle. Considering the depth in the room, that might not be an immediate issue.
Shedeur Sanders is expected to return for the 2024 season at Colorado. His backup, 2023 signee Ryan Staub, fared well in his first start this past Saturday against Utah, completing 17 of his 24 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown. If both are back in 2024, Colorado can feel good about its top two options.
However, the de-commitment does further call into question the future of Sean Lewis in Boulder. Lewis was O’Neil’s primary recruiter, and he has seen his name tossed around for several open coaching positions around the country.
Lewis is in his first year with the program as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. But coach Deion Sanders relieved him of play-calling responsibilities prior to Colorado’s Nov. 4 game against Oregon State and installed former analyst Pat Shurmur as the new play-caller.
On Sunday, former tight end coach Tim Brewster — demoted to facilitate Shurmur’s elevation to a full-time assistant — announced his resignation. That move is the first of several expected changes to Sanders’ staff.
