What has been dubbed the greatest play in the history of college football will soon be immortalized outside California Memorial Stadium.

The Golden Bears announced on Tuesday that a statue of Kevin Moen — the man who scored the touchdown that punctuated ‘The Play’ in the Big Game in 1982 — will be unveiled this weekend along Piedmont Avenue on the southwest side of the stadium.

Fans are being invited to join members of the 1982 team at the statue — located at the bottom of the Gate 4 staircase — to start the “March To Victory” on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. The Bears host Stanford at 2:30 p.m. (Pac-12 Network) for the 125th edition of the Big Game.

This year’s matchup marks the 40-year anniversary of ‘The Play.’

“The Play is firmly etched in the minds and hearts of generations of Cal fans, and the iconic image of Kevin Moen scoring the game-winning touchdown in the 1982 Big Game will now have a permanent home in Berkeley,” athletic director Jim Knowlton said in a release. “Our fans will now be reminded of this memorable piece of Cal history every time they attend a game or simply walk up Piedmont Ave. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate the unwavering legacy of The Play.”

According to Cal, the statue was created by Brian Hanlon, an internationally acclaimed artist whose work includes statues of Shaquille O’Neal, Jim Brown, Bob Cousy, and Charles Barkley.

“I wanted to create a larger-than-life figure because that moment is larger than life,” Hanlon said in a release. “My intent as an artist was to capture the energy of that moment. It really is just one of the amazing athletic moments in NCAA history.”

Added Moen: “It was a little shocking when I found out about it. When someone talks about making a permanent statue of you – that’s not something that happens every day. But then it sunk in that this is kind of a great tribute to the spirit of that 1982 team. It’s a great way to honor that group of guys and to memorialize the whole craziness of that event.”

Saturday’s game against Stanford will also be the final Big Game called by legendary Cal play-by-play announcer Joe Starkey. Starkey, whose voice you can hear above on the radio call for ‘The Play,’ is retiring at the end of the season after 48 years behind the mic.
