Cal will play host to Seattle (Wash.) Garfield quarterback EJ Caminong this weekend.

The 3-star 2024 quarterback arrives Thursday for an official visit, and it’s a big one for the Golden Bears. Cal has just five known commitments in its 2024 class at this point and it’s looking for a spark to jumpstart things. Perhaps that’s this weekend.

Ten prospects will take official visits to Berkeley this weekend. Among them are two current Cal pledges. Getting Caminong, a former Washington commit who backed off that pledge last week, to join the group would be huge for coach Justin Wilcox and Co.

Caminong is the No. 589 overall prospect and the No. 37 quarterback in the 2024 class, according to the industry-generated 247 Composite. He’s also the No. 8 recruit from the state of Washington. He originally committed to UW in October of 2022, but re-opened his recruitment just days after an official visit to Texas A&M.

The Golden Bears didn’t take a freshman quarterback in the 2023 class, but they did add a pair of Power Five transfers at the position in Sam Jackson — the presumptive 2023 starter — and Ben Finley. Jackson has three years of eligibility remaining, but the Golden Bears would like to add to a quarterback room that has been shaken up by the transfer portal.
