Tommy Lloyd has had arguably the most successful start to his head coaching career of anyone in college basketball history.

In beating Stanford on Thursday, Lloyd earned his 59th career win, passing North Carolina’s Bill Guthridge for the most wins by a head coach in their first two seasons. “It’s an extra special honor for me,” Lloyd said then.

Only, he wasn’t done.

On Saturday night, as Arizona defeated UCLA to claim the 2023 Pac-12 Tournament championship, Lloyd became the first coach in conference history to win each of his first six conference tournament games.

Lloyd is now 61-10 in two seasons as the Arizona head coach. After sweeping the conference titles last season, Arizona finished the regular season as the runner-up to UCLA this time around. However, in beating the Bruins on Saturday, Arizona still managed to win two of three against UCLA on the year.

Arizona is the only school to repeat as Pac-12 Tournament champions, doing so twice now. The 2016-17 squad and 2017-18 squad took home the tournament crown as well.

Lloyd will look for that success to translate to the NCAA Tournament, where the Wildcats figure to garner a top-two seed in the field. Last year’s team made the Sweet 16. This year’s group will hope to make it a bit further.
