Tommy Lloyd critical of Azuolas Tubelis after Arizona's loss to Arizona State
Tommy Lloyd spared no feelings when he met with reporters after No. 7 Arizona was stunned at home by Arizona State at the buzzer.
The Wildcats gave up 89 points in the loss. They blew what was at one juncture late in the second half a 10-point lead. Five Sun Devils scored in double-digits, led by 19 from Desmond Cambridge Jr. and 18 from DJ Horne. ASU shot 54% from the field and nearly 40% from 3.
Lloyd was specifically frustrated with the defense played by UA forward Azuolas Tubelis.
“I thought defensively he was bad. He just didn’t play great defense tonight and that’s kinda disappointing,” Lloyd said. “I don’t care about overall stats. I’ll be honest with you, I don’t even look at the overall stats. I couldn’t tell you what his shooting percentage is, how many points he’s scoring, but I know effort on defense. And he’s gotta play better.”
Asked if he thought part of the issue was a reluctance on the part of Tubelis to draw early fouls, Lloyd wasn’t having it.
“Not an excuse,” he said. “It’s basketball. It’s high-level basketball. Suck it up.”
Tommy Lloyd didn’t mince words when assessing Azuolas Tubelis’ performance against ASU.

Tubelis has been somewhat bottled up since the Stanford loss.
He had four points in that game on Feb. 11, limited to 17 minutes by four fouls. He played just 20 minutes and 22 minutes in the Wildcats’ wins over Utah and Colorado last week, with foul trouble an issue once again.
Scoring wasn’t the issue on Saturday; Tubelis finished with 17 points and nine boards while making five of his eight shots from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. The Stanford game remains the lone outing this season Tubelis has failed to reach 10 points.
But the other end of the floor has slipped recently for a player who looked like a lock to win Pac-12 Player of the Year just a few weeks ago.
It seems Lloyd is trying to light a fire under Tubelis with the Pac-12 Tournament right around the corner.
