Jedd Fisch updates Arizona quarterback situation ahead of USC game
Jedd Fisch made it clear Monday at his press conference there is no quarterback controversy in Tucson. If Jayden de Laura is healthy, he’ll start on Saturday against No. 9 USC.
The Wildcats’ regular starter for the first four games of the season, de Laura was unavailable against Washington Saturday night. Noah Fifita started in his place, throwing for 232 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-24 loss. Fifita had one interception while completing 27 of his 39 passes.
Fisch told reporters on Monday that de Laura will be re-evaluated Tuesday morning before practice and Arizona will go from there.
If he is cleared to play on Saturday, de Laura will start
“I think that would be a safe statement to make,” Fisch said.
In making his first start, Fisch thought Fifita played well.
“I think he played at a good level for a guy that was thrown into a game that was in front of a sellout crowd against a top-10 team,” Fisch said. “I thought he played at a really high level. You look around college football, Duke lost their quarterback, Kansas lost their quarterback. It’s very tough to win in those circumstances, but Noah gave us a chance to do that and I’m excited about, if Noah is playing this coming week, he’ll give us a great chance to win.”
On the season, de Laura has completed 69.6% of his passes for 1,069 yards. He has nine touchdowns against five interceptions and is averaging 8.6 yards per pass. He threw four interceptions in the 31-24 overtime loss to Mississippi State on the road in week 2, but was clean throughout the entirety of the UTEP game the following week and then again through three quarters against Stanford before leaving the game.
