Arizona lost its top 2024 recruit Sunday night.

Five-star Tucson (Ariz.) Salpointe Catholic edge rusher Elijah Rushing announced on social media he is re-opening his recruitment and leaving Arizona’s class. Rushing committed to the Wildcats back in July over Oregon, Notre Dame, UCLA, and Tennessee.

Rushing’s father told 247Sports the family has been in continued contact with Oregon, Washington, UCLA, Arizona State, Tennessee, and Auburn.

“As a hometown kid, my desire was to rep my city while becoming the best version of myself,” Rushing said in a post on social media. “I have taken into consideration the recent progress and strides the program has made. Although it is evident that the program is on the rise, I have to consider my future goal. I have come to the conclusion that the program is not the right fit for me to take the next step with regard to my development.”

Rushing’s father told 247Sports that Arizona is “building more long term” and that does not “align with our goals.”

The 6-foot-6. 251-pound Rushing is the No. 1 recruit from the state of Arizona this cycle. He’s ranked as the No. 3 edge in the class and the No. 26 overall prospect in the country, according to the industry-generated 247 Composite.

As a junior last fall, he recorded 13.5 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and 73 total tackles in 12 games.

The Ducks got an official visit in June, as did Tennessee and Notre Dame. He took an official visit to UCLA in late May.

With Rushing’s departure, Arizona’s class drops down to No. 44 in the composite team rankings. The Wildcats hold 21 known commitments this cycle.
