Social media reacts to news that Arizona State has fired coach Herm Edwards
Arizona State announced on Sunday that it has ‘mutually’ agreed to part ways with head coach Herm Edwards after Saturday night’s 30-21 loss to Eastern Michigan.
Edwards was 26-20 as Arizona State’s head coach, hired by athletic director Ray Anderson prior to the 2018 season and hailed as the kind of coach who could usher in the ‘pro model’ at the college level. Edwards produced three winning seasons in four years — the only year that wasn’t was a 2-2 mark during the four-game 2020 season — but his program has been embroiled in an NCAA investigation for over a year.
According to Devils Digest, however, the investigation into alleged recruiting violations had nothing to do with Edwards’ departure. Multiple reports have suggested Edwards “relinquished” his duties as head coach in the wake of Saturday’s loss, which dropped the team to 1-2 on the season.
The news comes as a shock to some, who thought Edwards might make it through the year given his relationship with Anderson. Reaction was swift in the wake of the news.
Here’s some of what folks are saying:
Not only had Herm not coached football in 10 years when he was hired by ASU, he hadn't coached in college in 30 years (when he was an assistant at San Jose State). His whole tenure went about as expected.

This was always where Arizona State was going to end up. But I’ll admit, I didn’t see it coming in Week 3.
More and more schools, like USC a year ago, are making those firing decisions early in the season.

Herm Edwards was fired from a job he never actually got to do.
The position he was hired for never existed.
All Herm wanted to do was help, and he did his best given the circumstances.
I appreciate him and will remember him as someone set up to fail and betrayed by “friends.”

I’m honestly stunned ASU moved on from Herm Edwards in the middle of the season considering how buddy-buddy he is with AD Ray Anderson and president Michael Crow.
Thought a move would’ve been done right after the Territorial Cup game or in early December.

Why is it so easy to envision Kliff Kingsbury going 7-6 each year at Arizona State in the zombie Pac-12

it was pointed out at the time, but it said something then that the coaching fraternity didn't care all that much about spilling the beans on Arizona State https://t.co/UlkUsvntWI

Arizona State wasted a lot of time knowing what the end result would be. Doing this now just means you’re wasting this entire season.
