Ray Anderson to receive full salary following resignation as Arizona State AD, per report
Ray Anderson gave up his title as the Arizona State athletic director this week. He did not, however, give up the compensation that comes with that former title.
According to a report from The State Press’ Katrina Michalak, Anderson’s contract will be amended following his resignation earlier this week, but his pay will remain the same in his new role as a professor as it was as the ASU AD — $950,ooo a year
On Monday, Anderson stated that a change in leadership was needed because he would not be able to “corral” all the changes that have come to collegiate sports in recent years. In an announcement from the university, it was stated that Anderson would transition into a role as a professor of practice and senior adviser at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.
According to reporting from The State Press, Anderson’s contract will not be bought out. He will be eligible for sports performance bonuses for Fall 2023 sports and sports that extend into the spring of 2024.
It’s unclear if Anderson will also be entitled to the retention bonus that his contract calls for on Dec. 31.
The move led many to question the leadership of university president Michael Crow, who is also still paying out the remainder of Herm Edwards’ buyout to not coach the ASU football team. At the time of his firing last year, Arizona State owed Edwards a reported $4.4 million through 2024.
The Anderson-Edwards partnership has Arizona State playing out one season with a self-imposed bowl ban while it awaits possible further sanctions from the NCAA over alleged recruiting violations that took place during Edwards’ tenure.
