Jaden Rashada is a strong contender to start for the Sun Devils in Week 1, according to a report.

On3’s Matt Zenitz shared that news on Wednesday, reporting that Rashada may be the “most likely” option to start ASU’s season-opener. He reports that Rashada has worked with Arizona State’s first team offense “a lot” this week.

The change comes following Drew Pyne’s hamstring injury. Pyne, a transfer from Notre Dame, was widely expected to win the starting job out of fall camp and had been getting the majority of 1st team reps prior to his injury.

However, with Pyne’s health for Week 1 in question, the competition is now down to Rashada and senior quarterback Trenton Bourguet.

Rashada was a significant addition for the Sun Devils in the class of 2023. After initially signing with Florida, Rashada ended up at Arizona State after his NIL deal with the Gators fell through.

Rashada was a 4-star prospect in the class of 2024. He was the No. 81 overall player and the No. 7 quarterback in the country for that cycle, per 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s also the No. 6 player from the state of California.

Kenny Dillingham is in his first offseason as Arizona State’s head coach.

Arizona State opens the 2023 season against Southern Utah on Aug. 31.
