One of the highest-rated recruits of the Herm Edwards era is out the door.

Arizona State wideout Johnny Wilson, after just two seasons with the program, has put his name in the transfer portal, according to The Athletic’s Doug Haller.

Wilson was a 4-star prospect in the 247 Composite coming out of high school. Rated as the 11th-best player from the talent-rich state of California and the 116th overall prospect in the Class of 2020, Wilson represented the 12th-best recruit the Sun Devils have signed in the 247 era (back to 2000).

But he had just six catches for 89 yards during the COVID-shortened 2020 season and 12 catches for 155 yards and a score in five games this season.

The 6-foot-7 freshman will exit the program having played in just eight of a possible 16 games during his time as a Sun Devil.

Wilson had more than 20 Power 5 offers from all over the country, SEC to Big Ten and throughout the West Coast. He’ll likely have no shortage of suitors as a portal entrant.
