ESPN's FPI predicts winner of Week 1's bout between Arizona State and Southern Utah
Arizona State kicks off its 2023 season on Thursday, August 31 against Southern Utah. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. MT, though will not be aired on TV.
The Sun Devils are entering Year 1 under the direction of Kenny Dillingham, who has previously served as OC for Oregon, Florida State and Auburn before landing in Tempe. He hopes to lead ASU past last season’s win-loss record of 3-9.
The Thunderbirds of Southern Utah play at the FCS level and finished last season with 5 wins following a 1-win campaign in 2021.
According to ESPN’s FPI (Football Power Index), the Sun Devils have a 96% chance to improve to 1-0 against the Thunderbirds. Honestly, it’s surprising the number isn’t even higher. ASU’s size alone makes this a near impossible task for Southern Utah.
The Sun Devils are entering Week 1 with a bit of a QB problem. Assumed starter Drew Pyne, a Notre Dame transfer, suffered a hamstring injury last week at practice, giving way for freshman Jaden Rashada to lead the offense. As of now, it’s unknown who will take the field as QB1 come August 31.
We’re less than 2 weeks away, ASU fans!
