Drew Pyne will make his first start for Arizona State on Saturday when the Sun Devils host No. 5 USC.

With Jaden Rashada unavailable and Trenton Bourguet listed as “very, very doubtful” by coach Kenny Dillingham earlier in the week, the expectation was that if Pyne could make it through the week healthy, he’d be the guy to lead the first-team offense on Saturday. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported as such Friday morning.

If Bourguet is truly unavailable for the game, Jacob Conover would be the likely backup to Pyne.

Pyne, a Notre Dame transfer this offseason, made his debut for ASU last week in the 29-0 loss to Fresno State. He completed five of his 13 passes for 52 yards and two interceptions before leaving the game with an injury.

Nothing worked for ASU against the Bulldogs. The Sun Devils turned the football over eight times in what was the program’s first time being shut out at home in nearly 40 years.

Bourguet started the game but was forced out in the first quarter with what appeared to be a lower leg injury.

Pyne started against the Trojans last season when he was with the Fighting Irish. In a 38-27 loss at the LA Coliseum, Pyne threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns while completing 23 of his 26 pass attempts.

The redshirt sophomore from New Canaan, Connecticut, started 10 games in total last season for Notre Dame. The Irish went 8-2 in those games as Pyne threw for 2,021 yards and 22 touchdowns against six interceptions. He completed 64.6% of his passes.

Dillingham is also expected to have more of a hand in play-calling for this weekend’s game against the Trojans. Dillingham took over play-calling from Beau Baldwin in practice earlier this week and said that will “probably” carry over to the game.

Kickoff at Mountain America Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. PT on FOX.
