Arizona State’s Saturday meeting with Colorado at Folsom Field is being dubbed the Interim Bowl.

Both programs parted ways with their respective head coaches earlier this season. Shaun Aguano leads the Sun Devils (2-5, 1-3 Pac-12) into Boulder to face Mike Sanford and the Buffaloes (1-6, 1-3 Pac-12).

Aguano is 1-3 since taking over for Herm Edwards. Sanford is 1-1 since taking over for Karl Dorrell. The Buffs picked up their first win of the season two weeks ago by beating California 20-13 in overtime, but followed that win up with a 42-9 drubbing at the hands of Oregon State.

The Sun Devils are trying to win at Folsom Field for the first time since 2014. They’re also attempting to break a string of five straight losses in road/neutral site games. And they’ll do so with serious questions at quarterback.

Aguano has already taken over play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Glenn Thomas, and he announced this week that Emory Jones would compete with Trenton Bourguet for the job after starting the first seven games.

“Going forward, it’s an open competition, a true open competition for both of those guys,” Aguano said earlier this week. “I still will say this, I’m going to pick the best guy that will get us that win.”

Colorado is rolling with JT Shrout at quarterback. We’ll see who ASU trots out.

Expert predictions

ESPN’s FPI gives Arizona State an 80.2% chance of beating Colorado.

Bill Connelly’s SP+ is calling for a 35-20 Arizona State win.

BuffStampede’s Adam Munsterteiger picked Arizona State to win 21-17:

I can’t imagine I’d be too nervous about Arizona State putting up a ton of points in this football game. I think this is maybe what the doctor ordered for Gerald Chatman and that defense to kind of get back on track and get things back there. But, I can’t do it. I can’t pick a Colorado win at this point.

BuffZone’s Brian Howell has Colorado pulling the upset and winning 24-21:

I don’t like ASU putting up a lot of points with all their issues going on offensively. I think Emory Jones has played well at times but who knows if he’s going to be their guy or not. … I do think this is maybe an opportunity for Gerald Chatman’s defense to get well a little bit.

Sun Devil Source’s Chris Karpman picked Arizona State to win 30-13.

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner picked ASU to not only win, but also cover the spread:

What of the states of mind on both sidelines? The Sun Devils haven’t been eliminated from the postseason, but their path narrowed considerably with the loss last week at Stanford, and it’s easier for focus to wane with an interim coach at the helm. (See: USC 2021.) The same goes for the Buffaloes, who mustered a better performance two weeks ago against Cal, then reverted to form in a blowout loss at Oregon State. Even if the psyches are comparable, ASU has a significant edge in another important area: playmakers.
