It took no time at all for Termarr Johnson’s name to come off the board during the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft Sunday night.

The Arizona State signee and elite prep prospect was taken fourth-overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 18-year-old infielder from Atlanta (Ga.) Mays High School is widely viewed as one the best pure hitters from the prep level in some time. Johnson was rated by Baseball America as the No. 1 high school draft prospect in the country for his class.

The slot value for the No. 4 pick is $7,002,100. The Pirates have the fourth-largest bonus pool in the draft at $13,733,900. Johnson is widely expected to head straight for the pros.

Had he been able to bring Johnson to campus, it would have been a major coup for coach Willie Bloomquist. Nonetheless, ASU will no doubt be celebrating Johnson’s selection.

He played shortstop in high school but is projected as a second baseman at the next level. As a junior in 2021, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound left-handed hitter hit .417 with eight doubles, five triples, nine home runs, and 23 stolen bases. He—and many others—consider him to be the best player in the draft.
