Arizona State linebacker Will Shaffer has left the team and intends to enter the transfer portal, according to a report.

That’s per Sun Devil Source’s Noah Furtado, who notes that Arizona State is now down to just 6 scholarship linebackers.

Shaffer has played in 4 games so far this season. By departing the team now, he can take a redshirt year and not lose a season of eligibility.

Shaffer was a member of Arizona State’s 2020 recruiting class. He opted to remain with the Sun Devils last offseason as Kenny Dillingham took over as head coach. He was a 3-star prospect out of Scottsdale in the 2020 cycle.

Shaffer has mostly served as a reserve linebacker for the last 4 seasons. He totaled 20 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 1 pass deflection during his time with the Sun Devils.

He will not be able to officially enter the transfer portal until the next transfer window opens in December. He will have 2 seasons of eligibility at his next destination.

Arizona State will face Cal on the road on Saturday.
