Arizona State names Trenton Bourguet new starter at QB following Colorado win
There is no longer an open quarterback competition in Tempe. Trenton Bourguet is the Sun Devils’ new starter.
Interim head coach Shaun Aguano confirmed to reporters on Monday what most suspected after watching Arizona State beat Colorado 42-34 last Saturday. Bourguet, who took over for Florida transfer Emory Jones, will be the guy going forward.
“Trenton has earned the right to be the starter,” Aguano said, via Sun Devil Source. “Our kids are doing well with him and they trust him. It’s a bad spot for Emory. The great conversation we had with Emory is that, ‘Coach I’ll be ready if the time comes.’ That’s always hard, but Trenton will be our starter. I think he did everything right. He plays with that moxie and our kids trust him.”
Bourguet will get the first-team reps throughout the week. Aguano says he thinks its a better way to handle the spot than to split reps and keep the entire offense in limbo week-to-week.
“It gives the offense the confidence that Trenton will be the guy going forward but Emory is very confident and very willing and able to take care of this offense,” he said. “Will there be changes if we got to him? I don’t think so. Our offense will fit both of these guys. But going forward Trenton will be the guy think will give us the best shot to win.”
Bourguet had one of the best passing performances against the Buffs on Saturday an opponent has ever had against Colorado. He completed 32 of his 43 attempts for 435 yards and three touchdowns against just one interception.
The fourth-year man from Tucson hit his first nine passes while leading back-to-back scoring drives that saw the Sun Devils jump out to an early 14-3 lead.
He’ll earn his second career start Saturday at home when ASU tries to knock off another top-25 opponent in Sun Devil Stadium. No. 10 UCLA comes to town for a 6:30 p.m PT kick on FS1.
