Arizona State linebacker Juwan Mitchell has been dismissed from the team, according to multiple reports.

Mitchell was in the midst of his first season with the Sun Devils after transferring from Tennessee earlier in the offseason. It’s unclear what specifically resulted in his dismissal, but DevilsDigest reported Monday that it stems from an incident that took place during practice late last week.

The Sun Devils just wrapped Week 1 of fall camp. Mitchell was expected to be a major contributor at linebacker this fall.

It’s also a move that comes just days after first-year head coach Kenny Dillingham reportedly dismissed sophomore cornerback Isaiah Johnson from the team. Dillingham has been clear about one thing early on in his ASU tenure: culture is everything.

SunDevilSource’s Chris Karpman reported that culture issues were a driving factor behind the decision to remove Mitchell from the team.

A 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior, Mitchell was an all-conference linebacker at Butler (Kan.) Community College before he signed with Texas in 2019. He spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with the Longhorns — starting eight times in 2020 and leading the team with 62 tackles — before moving to Tennessee ahead of the 2021 season.

He spent two more seasons in Knoxville, where he again earned himself a starting role. Mitchell had 43 tackles for the Volunteers last fall.

With Mitchell out of the picture, look for Will Shaffer and Travion Brown to lock down the two starting jobs in the middle of the defense.
