Arizona State has its first win on the recruiting trail since it announced its upcoming move to the Big 12.

And that victory came in the heart of Big 12 country.

On Saturday, the Sun Devils received a verbal pledge from 2025 cornerback Joseph Smith. The 6-foot-1 defender out of Spring (Texas) Legacy the School of Sport Sciences chose ASU over offers from Utah, Washington State, Houston, Kansas, Purdue, and SMU, among others.

Smith is currently unranked in the industry-generated 247 Composite.

Last fall, he was credited with 78 tackles, 13 pass breakups, seven interceptions, a fumble recovery, and a tackle for loss. He found the endzone five times from either defense or special teams; Smith returned two of his picks for scores, he returned two punts for touchdowns, and he returned one kickoff for a touchdown.

ASU is getting a playmaker.

And it’s an early win in the Lone Star State. Coach Kenny Dillingham identified Texas on Saturday as a crucial piece of ASU’s move to the Big 12. The Sun Devils will have much more visibility in the state as a member of the Big 12, and winning battles there will go a long way toward helping Dillingham turn things around in The Valley.
