Arizona State LB Will Shaffer has confirmed that he has played his last down for Kenny Dillingham’s Sun Devils.

It was reported earlier Wednesday that Shaffer has left the team with the intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Shaffer posted a note Wednesday confirming that he will not be suiting up for the rest of the 2023 season. By taking a redshirt this year, Shaffer will have 2 remaining seasons of eligibility.

The transfer portal is not currently open for undergraduate injury. Shaffer says he will graduate from ASU and enter the portal as a grad transfer.

“I just wanted to say, first, thank you to Arizona State University for an amazing 3.5 years,” Shaffer wrote in a note posted to social media. “Being a local kid, this has been a dream come true. I have made relationships and bonds that’ll last a lifetime. I would lik to thank Coach Dillingham, Coach Mohns, and the rest of the staff for everything they’ve done. To my teammates, I love every single one of you and y’all have been extremely supportive of my decision.

“I will be using my redshirt year, and will enter the transfer portal. I will be graduating with my degree in December and will have the opportunity to pursue a graduate program with 2 years of eligibility.”

At ASU, Sahffer recorded 20 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and 1 pass breakup. The Sun Devils are on the road at Cal in Week 5.
