Arizona State beat No. 20 Michigan on Thursday night to win the 2022 Legends Classic, 87-62.

It was the largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent in ASU program history. Arizona State dominated, leading wire-to-wire to move to 4-1 on the year. The victory was coach Bobby Hurley’s 10th over a ranked opponent in his eight years with Arizona State and earned him the third mid-season tournament crown of his career.

It was also the largest margin of victory by an unranked Pac-12 team against a ranked opponent in 15 seasons — since USC beat No. 19 Southern Illinois by 25 (70-45) on Nov. 25, 2007.

The win came one night after beating VCU 63-59. Arizona State opened up with back-to-back wins to begin the season, but lost an overtime game in Houston to Texas Southern last Sunday. After last year’s rocky start, this was quite the way to highlight what a difference a year makes.

ASU was led by 20 points from Desmond Cambridge Jr. and 19 from DJ Horne. They shot a combined 14-for-26 from the field and knocked in seven of ASU’s 11 triples.

“I had great feelings about DJ (Horne),” Hurley said. “DJ dove on the floor, took a huge charge last night and he can really score. He struggled to make shots last night but he made that one late in the left corner (against VCU). When you make those plays late, I knew he would be ready to knock down shots tonight.

“Same thing with Desmond Cambridge Jr. He is in a new environment and had a breakout game. Last night, he had a three-point game in the paint and I thought, ‘Alright, he can get it going tonight.’ It was great to see that and the balance we had on offense.”

It was a complete effort, though. The Sun Devil defense suffocated Michigan, holding the Wolverines to season-lows for points (62), shooting percentage (34%), and 3-point percentage (18%).

ASU had six blocked shots and held an opponent under 70 points for the fifth straight game to begin the year.

The 30 blocks through five games are the most the team has had through five games to open a season since 2013-14. It’s also the first time since the 2009-10 season that ASU has made it through five games without allowing a 70-point performance to the opposition.

ASU returns to the court on Tuesday against Grambling State at home (6 p.m. PT tip, Pac-12 Network).
