Former Penn State reserve offensive lineman Des Holmes will play his final season of ball in Tempe.

The 6-foot-5, 310 pound lineman worked primarily as a backup for the Nittany Lions over his career, with the bulk of his 32 appearances coming on special teams. Holmes has played both tackle and guard, and he announced Wednesday night he’s transferring to Arizona State.

Holmes made 10 appearances in 2021. He played in all 13 games as a redshirt sophomore in 2019 and was expected to compete for a starting spot in 2020, but injuries limited him to only four games.

Coach Herm Edwards will have some flexibility to build out his offensive line in 2022. Holmes should be able to compete for a starting gig right away as ASU looks to replace three departing starters from the 2021 line—left tackle Kellen Diesch, right guard Henry Hattis, and center Dohnovan West.
